Jikken Kōbō (which means Experimental Workshop) was a Tokyo-based interarts collective that was active in the early 1950s.
Like The Independent Group in England (“who?” you might ask), Jikken Kōbō is immensely important and largely forgotten. The group was a foundation for the interarts groups that emerged in the late 1950s and through the 1960s. Jikken Kōbō was one of the first groups in Japan to pick up where Surrealism and Dada had left off before the war. That is, they were interested in what could be made from blending arts practices and using new and even futuristic technologies.
